Going to business school is definitely not for the faint of heart. You will learn all kinds of life lessons that will ensure your success in life, but it won’t come easily. When you are in business school you will be held to a very high standard, and if you are not ready for the challenge, then you will have a very hard time getting through. That’s why you need to know some of the basic strategies that some of the most successful business school students follow in order to get through their education in one piece. Here are five helpful tips for new business school students.
- Organize a Study Group
There’s only so much you can do as one person, and it will be much easier to keep up with your studies if you have other people to rely on. You won’t be relying on these people to do any of your work for you, you will be relying on them to get a better understanding of the material. When you engage in thoughtful discussion about the content you’re studying, everything will make a lot more sense.
- Learn How to Network
Learning how to network is essential to any business person. You will need to know how to connect with the right people when you are in business, and every industry has its own individual rules of decorum. When you start networking you will notice that there are certain things you should and shouldn’t talk about, and there is a certain finesse that you need to have with people in order to open them up.
- Learn How to Effectively Skim
You are going to have a lot of dry reading that you will need to get through, and if you don’t learn how to skim through a lot of your text in an effective way, then you won’t be able to get through all of your required reading. In most cases, you can get a very clear understanding of the content by simply reading the intro and conclusion paragraphs, as well as the first and last sentence of every other paragraph.
- Create a Highly Regimented Schedule
Every day of your week should have a very discrete list of tasks that need to be completed and each of those tasks should be assigned to a specific block of time. This is not just the case for the week days, but also the weekends. You want to make sure that even your meals and your exercise sessions are marked on your agenda, because these are regular parts of your schedule that need to be accounted for.
- Accept Opportunity Cost
One of the most important lessons you’ll learn in business school is the concept of opportunity cost. This means that for every opportunity that you seize, you will be closing the door to another one. So while you may have been considering applying for Northeastern’s masters in finance, now that you’ve chosen business school, you will have opportunities that wouldn’t have been available to you at Northeastern.
