In business you need at least one superpower.
By Charles Bosse– Internet Millionaire
Internet Marketing what is your superpower. When I was a kid I used to argue with my friends about what superpower I would choose if I had the choice. Some of my friends thought the power to fly would be the best, some thought to be bullet proof was a good idea. I don’t remember anyone wanting to be good with a lasso like Wonder Woman by the way. I spent far too much time as a kid dreaming about which of the many superpowers would be the best one. As I think back now I’m pretty sure just to be Superman would be enough; all the other superheroes seemed really ripped off in the superpower stakes.
I have no special skills when it comes to business. I’m not particularly educated, unless you call Grade 9 of high school educated. No one in my family had any money; my family were dirt poor. I never had any relatives with more than $2 to rub together. I didn’t have any magical connections. I never got an amazing internship with some entrepreneurial type. I never studied a business subject. I grew up in a country town where the main priority was to simply get a job, and if you did that you would be set for life.
Over the past 20 years I have watched, along with everyone else, the rise of the internet. Before the internet you could almost build a business around your listing in the Yellow Pages. Every year you would spend as much as you dare putting in a quarter page ad to get your phone to ring. I remember spending up to $20,000 dollars on just one ad. Then one day the sales guy from the Yellow Pages came along and offered me the top listing in our niche, online. It was $400 and I remember thinking, ‘WOW who would ever use the internet to get our number?’ The promise was; as long as I kept paying the $400 each year I would be the top listing in our category, online. The first year not too much happened, the second year (around 1995) it was like someone had flicked a switch and my $400 got me more phone calls than the $20,000 printed ad. It didn’t take too long after that to realise that things were changing fast and the days of expensive print media advertising were over.
The Internet has not only changed the advertising world, it’s changed the game generally. Now you can build a good website for a few thousand dollars; less if you have the skills, and bingo you are in business. I don’t care what your business is or what your idea is, there are some keys to making money online; understanding SEO and getting customers to visit and buy from your website is a big one.
But if you want to talk about superpowers; well I don’t really have any. For the past 20 years I have spent most of that time broke or just getting by. However, over the past 8 years I have had a crazy obsession and love for online marketing and Search Engine Optimisation. So in some respects I have just one business superpower; the ability to drive traffic to a website and make money from it.
I now know enough about online marketing and SEO that with any website I build, I know I will make plenty of money from it. In fact, I now make millions of dollars every year from my online marketing strategies. I don’t have a traditional business, I work from my home, I spend most my day by the pool and I let my websites make me more money than I have ever dreamed of.
If you want to make money from your website then you need to read and understand the way that SEO works, and that starts by realising that there are many different paths to your goals. You can go at it alone, like I did, and take the hard path rarely travelled, learn it all yourself and become an expert at it. The downside to this is that you will quickly realise just how complicated it is. Hours, days, and months that you should be putting into the running of your business are going to be taken up by SEO instead. So you are going to need to think about where you personally want to be spending your time, and what areas you can, and should, be getting other people to do for you.
Because In business you need at least one superpower, it can be thattalent in making your product, it can be ingenuity and thinking up new ideas, or it can be online marketing, and SEO. But you need to realise that there is only so much time in a day, and only so much that you can do yourself because we only really get to choose one or two superpowers – we cannot have them all like superman.
So when thinking of your business, think what will be best for you, and what you want your superpower to be – because it can even be making millions from your website; you just have to know the rules of the game.
